Are you ready to embark on the adventure of a lifetime with the Great Lakes Odyssey? Here's how to get started and make the most of this incredible journey with your students.
Step 1: Visit the Park Pages- Start by visiting the page of each park you'll be joining us on during the Great Lakes Odyssey. You will find a wealth of resources tailored to each park. Begin with the vocabulary list and reading list—these are usually great places to get acquainted with the topics we'll be exploring.
Step 2: Map It Out- Make sure to have a large map of the Great Lakes displayed in your classroom. This visual aid will help students see where they’re going as we explore the parks together. It’s a great way to build excitement and give context to the journey.
Step 3: Identify the Challenge-Each park visit will focus on a specific problem or challenge. Have your students use their own journals or print off a copy of the Great Lakes Odyssey journal to jot down their thoughts. Encourage them to identify what they would like to learn about each park and how they might approach the challenges we'll discuss.
Step 4: Dive Into the Books-We’ve curated a list of books related to each park, many of which have a read-aloud component on Epic or YouTube. Choose a few to read with your class before our LiveStream events. This will help students get into the spirit of the adventure and deepen their understanding of the topics.
Step 5: Read the Graphic Comic- Before virtually visiting each park, read the graphic comic that corresponds to that location. Have your students think about which role they would like to play in the book. They will have the chance to add their own stories and become part of the adventure!
Step 6: Prepare for the LiveStream-Join us for each LiveStream! Gather any materials you'd like to have on hand during the event. Ask your students to create a few questions they have for the scientists and rangers. You can submit these questions ahead of time to [email protected], and we’ll make sure to call on your student during the event. Ensure that your students can be seen on camera if they’re participating. If not, just keep your camera off during the event. We will see you soon!
Get ready to set sail on the Great Lakes Odyssey—this is more than just a field trip; it’s an epic journey that will inspire and engage your students in ways they’ll never forget. We’re so glad you’re joining us on this adventure!
