Addressing Environmental Resilience in Puerto Rico

Explore and Question:
Driving Question:
How can innovative engineering solutions contribute to enhancing environmental resilience and fostering sustainable development in Puerto Rico amidst a backdrop of diverse environmental challenges?
Introduction: In this engineering design challenge, students will confront the urgent issue of environmental resilience in Puerto Rico. The island grapples with a multitude of environmental threats, including hurricanes, flooding, landslides, and sea-level rise, worsened by climate change and urbanization. Students will devise inventive solutions to bolster the island's resilience and mitigate the repercussions of these environmental adversities.

Investigate and Create:
1. Research Primary Environmental Threats:
  • Form small research groups, assigning each group one primary environmental threat faced by Puerto Rico, such as hurricanes, flooding, landslides, sea-level rise, coastal erosion, or water contamination.
  • Conduct online research to gather information on the assigned environmental threat. Explore scientific journals, government reports, and reputable environmental organizations' websites to compile comprehensive information.
  • Collaborate to create a digital presentation summarizing findings, including the causes, impacts, and potential consequences of the assigned environmental threat on Puerto Rico.
2. Understand Impact on Communities and Ecosystems:
  • Analyze how these threats impact communities and ecosystems in Puerto Rico.
  • Explore case studies, real-life examples, and firsthand accounts to understand the severity of the challenges faced by different regions and demographic groups within Puerto Rico.
  • Use multimedia resources such as videos, articles, and interviews to gather information on the social, economic, and ecological implications of environmental threats on Puerto Rican communities and ecosystems.
  • Independently create a visual representation (poster, infographic, or digital collage) highlighting the impact of environmental threats on communities and ecosystems in Puerto Rico.
3. Explore Existing Engineering Solutions:
  • Research existing engineering solutions implemented elsewhere to address similar environmental challenges faced by Puerto Rico.
  • Analyze case studies and projects from around the world to identify innovative approaches, successful strategies, and lessons learned in addressing environmental threats.
  • Use a variety of resources such as academic journals, engineering publications, and online databases to compile a list of existing engineering solutions and their effectiveness in mitigating environmental threats.
  • Create a short written report summarizing findings, highlighting key engineering solutions that could be adapted to Puerto Rico's context.
4. Engineering Design Challenges:
  • Create an engineering design prototype to help solve one of the following environmental threats:
    • Flood Protection and Resilient Infrastructure
    • Coastal Defense and Erosion Control
    • Landslide Prevention and Slope Stabilization
    • Water Contamination Remediation
    • Seawall and Barrier Design for Sea-Level Rise
List of Questions:
  • What are the primary environmental threats facing Puerto Rico?
  • How do these threats impact communities and ecosystems in Puerto Rico?
  • What existing engineering solutions address environmental resilience in other regions?
  • How can engineering principles be applied to develop sustainable solutions tailored to Puerto Rico's specific challenges?

Abordando la Resiliencia Ambiental en Puerto Rico

Explorar y Cuestionar:

Investigar y Crear:

Investigar Amenazas Ambientales Principales:
