Education and Park Rangers

The National Parks of the United States are true treasures, from the peaks of the Rockies to the beaches of Cumberland Island. These natural sanctuaries are made even more beautiful by the people who take care of them - the Park Rangers. Through our STEAM in the PARK initiative, 'Expeditions in Education' has had the pleasure of partnering with these amazing individuals for the past three years. Our educational journeys have been transformed by their passion, dedication, and camaraderie. Here are a few of our encounters:

• Rangers Jen and Bethany, National Mall: Their fervor for the historic expanse of the National Mall captivated not just the students but also our educators. The narratives shared turned landmarks into living tales of the nation's past.
• Ranger Jennifer, Mammoth Cave: In the heart of Kentucky’s subterranean wonders, Jennifer’s expertise illuminated the cave's geological marvels, making every expedition a learning odyssey.
• Ranger Robin, Cumberland Island: Robin’s love of history was evident as he shared with us the rich cultural treasures of this beautiful island and became one of us very quickly. 
• Ranger Lisa, Big Cypress: The swamps came alive under Lisa’s guidance, as she showcased its delicate ecosystems, resonating especially with our biology enthusiasts.
• Ranger Kate, Acadia: Kate's tales of Acadia, from its high peaks to its rugged shores, painted a comprehensive picture of the park's ecological diversity.
• Ranger Katie, Rocky Mountains: The grandeur of the Rockies became an interactive classroom with Katie, making geology and ecology tangible subjects.
• Ranger Dean, Olympic: Dean’s narratives about Olympic’s ecosystems inspired awe, from its dense rainforests to its misty coastlines.
• Ranger Mark, Voyageurs: Floating on Voyageurs’ waters with Mark was an education in freshwater ecosystems and their profound importance.
• Rangers Sheila and Lori, New River: They turned every bend of the New River into a story, blending natural history with ecology.
• Science Facilitators John and Annie, Great Smoky Mountains: The Smokies came alive with John and Annie’s scientific approach. Their expertise turned every campfire talk and trail walk into vibrant biology and ecology lessons.
• Ranger Jody, Hawai'i Volcanoes: Jody’s insights into the volcanic landscapes revealed not just geology but also the intricate balance of life and culture around them.
• Ranger Beth, Jimmy Carter: Beth made President Carter’s legacy relatable, blending history with civics lessons.
• Rangers Mike and Dave, Crater Lake: At Crater Lake, these rangers made us ponder deep on the lake's formation and its ecological significance.
• Ranger Laura, Redwoods: Among the ancient giants of Redwoods, Laura stressed the importance of preservation and the role of forests in our world.
• Rangers Sophie and Andres, Bryce Canyon: Their knowledge and extremely fun personalities transformed the canyon’s iconic hoodoos into geology lessons, spanning millions of years.
• Rangers Susan, Bobbie and Solveig, Niobrara River: They introduced us to the tranquility of the river and the beauty of the bison.

Their collaboration has been instrumental in impacting hundreds of educators during summer camps and enlightening thousands of students in classrooms. With their invaluable support, we’ve woven the wonders of nature with the threads of education, creating experiences that stay with students for a lifetime.
To our National Park Rangers and the dedicated science educators, our gratitude knows no bounds. As we embark on more expeditions, we're buoyed by the thought of continuing this enriching partnership. Here's to furthering education, one park at a time!
